Brown Butter Sour Cream Cookies

Now THAT is a mouthful for a cookie title, no?

I just recently discovered the beauty of online grocery shopping. It's not something I'd typically do because I am a weirdo who loves grocery shopping, but sometimes life gets hectic and a little convenience goes a long way. I ordered groceries online using a coupon for free shipping and was thrilled. Everything came as I ordered... except the sour cream. I ordered one and got two. Not the worst thing in the world, but I was left with an extra sour cream and no ideas.

I had heard of sour cream cookies before but I never had any. I googled sour cream cookies, searched through the results, and decided on these beauties. I love a good butter cookie... particularly a soft butter cookie. This recipe came together quickly and didn't require me to bust out my stand mixer, which is nice. The result were delicious. Buttery, soft, cake-like. John and I happily enjoyed these cookies all week. Definitely a great way to use up some sour cream if you find yourself in my situation!

Ingredients:
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup butter, browned and cooled slightly
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup sour cream
Directions:
Heat the oven to 350 F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl cream together the butter and the sugar.  The mixture will be very wet.  Add the vanilla, egg, and sour cream and mix until well blended.
In a small bowl sift together the dry ingredients.  Add the dry into the wet and mix until well incorporated, but do not over mix.
Scoop out the cookies by the rounded tablespoon on the prepared pans.  Bake for 10 – 12 minutes, or until golden around the edges while still pale in the center.  Cool on the pan for five minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

  1. Stephanie, I made these cookies today, and you are so right. they are AMAZING!!! I was really happy with how they turned out, especially because I've never browned butter before but the nuttiness of it smelled so good and the cookies were so delicious. I love all of the recipes you find and create, thank you so much for sharing!!

  2. getting ready to bake some of these browned butter/sour cream cookies. browned butter finds its way into things i cook all the time. sour cream too, come to think of it.,,,you don't mention it, but i'm assuming that the egg gets incorporated into the wet mixture before adding the dry ingredients, right?

  3. you don't indicate in your recipe when the egg is added. i'm assuming it goes into the wet mixture before the dry ingredients, yes?
